By B.J. Pollock Tuesday, March 13, 2007 12:27 PM CDT
Monday's 5 p.m. deadline for candidates to file for the May 12 city elections brought an 11th-hour challenger to Rosenberg Mayor Joe Gurecky, as former councilman Fran Naylor filed at about 4:20 p.m.
Also filing Monday was District 1 Councilman Antonio Martinez. The remaining incumbents have filed for reelection as well, with Martinez, Position 1 at-large Councilman James Carl Hopkins and Position 2 at-large Councilman Waline Sebesta drawing no opposition. Incumbent Joe Segura is being challenged by Karen Mendoza for District 2; Dwayne Grigar's opponent for District 3 is Cowboy Bill; and Tom Suter's challenger for District 4 is Charlie Nays.
Rosenberg residents will also vote on a proposition on whether to enable the city to adopt a zoning ordinance on any state uniform election day in May or November.
In Simonton, incumbents Tom Carroll, Tom Walker and Peggy Wright are unopposed for their bids for reelection, but voters will go to the polls to cast ballots regarding a proposition to reauthorize a quarter-of-a-percent sales and use tax for road maintenance. The proposition was approved by Simonton voters in 2003, but must be reauthorized every four years.
